Josh Gad has dropped out of his upcoming run in the stage musical Jesus Christ Superstar after coming down with Covid.

The Frozen actor was due to star alongside Cynthia Erivo, Adam Lambert and Phillipa Soo in a three-night run of the famed rock opera at the Hollywood Bowl from Friday.

However, the star took to Instagram on Wednesday to announce that he had to pull out of the show after testing positive for Covid.

"It is with enormous heartbreak that I inform you all that unfortunately, I have contracted a virus known as COVID (remember that little b**tard from season one of 'Earth really sucks right now'?)" he wrote. "Anyway, out of an abundance of caution and respect for my cast, I will not be performing in Jesus Christ Superstar this weekend (unless I test negative)."

He continued, "It truly breaks my heart, but I can assure you all that the show is going to be one of the greatest things you will ever see. I hope at some point you get to see me wear the crown and show you what we've been up to, because it was quite something, but for now, sadly, I will not be able to grace the Hollywood Bowl."

Organisers at the Hollywood Bowl wished Gad a "speedy recovery" and told followers that they will announce a replacement for King Herod soon.

Gad, whose previous theatre credits include The Book of Mormon and Gutenberg! The Musical!, was set to play King Herod alongside Erivo as Jesus Christ, Lambert as Judas, and Soo as Mary Magdalene.

The latest staging of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's musical runs from Friday to Sunday.
