Treasure Island

There is something wonderfully infectious about Treasure Island at the Arches Lane Theatre. Thick as Thieves Company and adaptor and director Nicky Diss have created an enthralling fast-paced adventure that captures the spirit of the Robert Louis Stevenson classic whilst making it equally enjoyable for young and old.

The production has a clear sense of storytelling. Diss keeps the action moving at a cracking pace, balancing adventure, and character with a theatricality that allows the three strong performers to create an entire world from packing cases and minimal props.

The three actors; Lilian Tsang, Thomas Judd and Lydia Cashman work together brilliantly, displaying an impressive versatility as they switch between characters with such aplomb and clarity. Then also respond with perfect timing to the participation or the young audience when they are co-opted in as additional characters such as pirates and for one cheeky sole the role of Captain. Their obvious chemistry gives the production a real sense of fun, clearly trusting one another and making the most of every comic and dramatic opportunity.

What is particularly successful is the way the production refuses to underestimate it’s younger audience, while still giving adults plenty to enjoy. The storytelling is energetic and accessible, but there is enough fun and invention to keep grown-ups thoroughly entertained too. It’s only shame is that it isn’t playing to fuller houses. At the performance I saw there were only three children which made some of the participation trickier, but it was clear how prepared the cast were for a rowdier audience.

Fast and full of adventure, this Treasure Island proves that you don’t need a huge cast or lavish production to create a big theatrical experience. Thick as Thieves have unearthed a treasure that deserves it place on the map of family entertainment.
