Showstopper! The Improvised Musical’s 1500th show was on the 20th of April 2026, and I truly understand why it has had so many shows. It was easily one of the most impressive live performances I have ever seen.
The premise of the show is that it is created on the spot, using suggestions from the audience; this includes the title, the theme and style. For show 1500, we landed on a musical called “I’m still not sure they’re mine”, which was centred around a dysfunctional parents evening, and from that simple idea, the cast really took it away and built a hilarious completely improvised show.
What stood out to me immediately, was the skill of the performers, who have really have honed in on their craft. Every random twist and turn that was thrown to each character felt natural and effortless. The live band matched this energy perfectly, being able to adapt in real time given suggestions from the narrator, making it all feel polished even though it was improvised. There were calls to SIX, Guys & Dolls as well as Cabaret to name a few, and everything was kept entertaining and genuinely funny throughout.
During the interval the audience participation continued, with audience members being asked to comment the plot and style of the next scenes via Instagram, which again added another layer of interaction. After the break the narrator read out a selection of these comments, and used the reactions to them to create the second half of the musical. What followed was a chaotic mismatch of funny twists and turns, all whilst still keeping the style of various popular musicals.
To me, it is no surprise that this show has received the recognition it has; Showstopper! The Improvised Musical was the first musical to be nominated for and win an Oliver Award. It also has multiple runs on the west end, has been at the Edinburgh Fringe for over a decade, and even has its own BBC Radio 4 series.
It is genuinely hard to believe that nothing in this show is prewritten. The combination of both comedy and music as well as spontaneity makes it completely unique, and I would absolutely go again.
'Showstopper! The Improvised Musical’ is at London’s iconic Cambridge Theatre throughout the year, for more information: https://lwtheatres.co.uk/whats-on/showstopper/'
