At the Lyric Theatre, Hadestown bursts to life in a rich, atmospheric production that feels both intimate and electrifying. From the moment Clive Rowe steps onto the stage as Hermes, the audience is in safe hands: his performance is warm, witty, and commanding. Rowe guides us through the intertwining worlds of the gods and mortals with effortless charm and a powerhouse presence.
Set against the backdrop of a grunge, speakeasy-inspired underworld, the production creates a distinctive and immersive vision of Hadestown. This smoky, industrial aesthetic perfectly complements the haunting love story of Orpheus and Eurydice. The storytelling feels immediate and emotionally charged, drawing the audience into a world where hope and hardship sit side by side.
What stands out most is the palpable sense of unity within the cast. There is a genuine warmth and mutual respect that radiates from the stage, from the onstage musicians, who are seamlessly woven into the action, to the dancing ensemble. Every movement and musical transition feels intentional and fluid, a testament to thoughtful direction that binds the company together as one cohesive force.
The Fates, with their soulful and spine-tingling harmonies, adding layers of tension and intrigue. Meanwhile, Orpheus is portrayed with a touching innocence that captures the purity of his character. His journey and his music bring a sense of light to the darkness of Hadestown, evoking images of spring and renewal even in the bleakest moments.
A particular highlight is Rachel Adedeji as Persephone. Her interpretation is vibrant and nuanced, balancing playfulness with underlying melancholy. She brings a dynamic energy to the stage, embodying both the joy and the fragility of a character caught between two worlds.
Special mention must also go to trombone player Daniel Higham, whose presence adds an extra layer of charisma to the production. Not only does he contribute musically to the show’s rich, jazz-infused sound, but his engaging stage presence and playful interaction with the audience ensure that the energy never dips — keeping the crowd entertained right through to the very end.
Overall, Hadestown is a visually striking and emotionally resonant production. With its exceptional performances, cohesive ensemble, and evocative staging, it offers a theatrical experience that lingers long after the final note.
