Holy, horny and hilarious.

From the opening note to the final bow, JEEZUS! is a small-scale miracle of wit, charm and irreverence. Written by Sergio Antonio Maggiolo with Guido García Lueches and Laura Killeen, this two-hander offers a sharp and unexpectedly touching take on faith, guilt and queer awakening.

Set in South America, it follows altar boy Jesús as he prepares for his first communion, only to develop a rather complicated crush on the crucified Christ. What unfolds is a bizarre romance between man and Messiah, played for both laughs and reflection. Maggiolo is captivating throughout, while García Lueches, guitar in hand, adds warmth and rhythm that make the show hum with life.

The highlight comes in a candid, shamelessly funny summary of Peru’s tangled colonial past, a burst of biting satire delivered through witty song and delightfully silly dance. It is brilliantly blasphemous and boundlessly bonkers, yet somehow never loses its heart. Bold, self-aware and refreshingly unpretentious, it reminds us that sometimes the rough edges make the sharpest points.

I grinned from start to finish. JEEZUS! proves that great theatre does not need spectacle to be spectacular, just courage, craft and a wicked sense of humour. For a two-man production, it more than earns its five stars.
