Julia Donaldson and Sara Ogilvie's acclaimed children's book, ‘The Detective Dog,’ has been thoughtfully adapted for the stage by Tiny and Tall Productions. This accessible and imaginative adaptation is currently showing at the 170-seat Jacksons Lane Theatre. The Grade II listed former Wesleyan Methodist church provides the perfect location to bring The Detective Dog to life.

The production follows the adventures of Detective Dog Nell, known for her remarkable sense of smell. Audiences can anticipate a blend of captivating puppetry and toe-tapping music that complements the storyline. The narrative centres on Nell and her owner as they investigate the mysterious disappearance of books from school. When a strangers cap is found at the scene, The Detective Dog gets on the case. Following the scent, Nell’s adventure sees her scuttling around the theatre to the delight of many young faces, but will Nell solve the mystery?

The ensemble cast features Maia Ayling, Amy Murray, and Hannah Tudge. The direction by Peta Maurice ensures a cohesive and engaging performance, while the design elements by Katie Sykes and Ruby Brown create a visually appealing set. Composer Jack Drewry's musical contributions add rhythm and energy to the production. The integration of BSL, directed by Lynn Stewart-Taylor, and the use of creative captions demonstrate the production's dedication to inclusivity.

Nell also makes a special appearance in the foyer after the show, giving her young fans the chance to meet her up close and personal. The perfect end to a lovely afternoon.
