Premiering Off-Broadway in 2024, White Rose: The Musical brings the powerful true story of the White Rose resistance to the stage in London. Set in Munich, Nazi Germany, it follows siblings Sophie and Hans Scholl and their fellow university students as they risk their lives distributing leaflets to challenge Hitler’s propaganda.
With book & lyrics by Brian Belding and music by Natalie Brice, the production effectively captures the bravery and idealism of youthful resistance. The cast delivers strong ensemble performances, and while the music adds emotional weight, some songs feel less essential, slowing the pacing—particularly in the first half. The staging is minimal but effective, with a raised platform providing depth and subtext, and Alex Musgrave’s lighting design playing a key role in heightening the drama, especially in the final scenes.
Though it doesn’t break new ground in the wartime musical genre, White Rose is a sincere and engaging tribute to a remarkable true story.
