Directed by Júlia Levai (Smoke, Did I Wake You?), Radiant Boy opened at Southwark Playhouse Borough on 23 May and runs through to 14 June.

Set in North-East England during a 1983 snowstorm, the play centres on trainee singer Russell (Thompson) and his mother Maud (Nottingham), who await the arrival of a young priest, Father Miller (Allen). Convinced that Russell is possessed, the priest’s visit sparks a tense and emotional night of reckoning. Renée Lamb plays Steph and ‘The Voice’.

Winner of the RSC’s 37 Plays competition, Radiant Boy is a haunting, lyrical examination of faith, queerness, shame and artistic expression. Levai shared, “I’m thrilled to work with this phenomenal cast on a story that is both deeply personal and strikingly relevant. It’s about how we understand ourselves in the face of fear and judgment—and how art can offer redemption.”

Netherwood, a rising voice in British playwriting, brings her trademark emotional depth and poetic style to this new work. Her previous plays include Warm Lonely Planet and Just Like the Films, and she is currently part of the London Library Emerging Writers Programme.

With design by Tomás Palmer, lighting by Lucía Sánchez Roldán and sound by Patch Middleton, Radiant Boy promises a powerful theatrical experience at one of London’s most exciting off-West End venues.
