Production photography has been released for English National Opera’s UK staging of Du Yun’s Pulitzer Prize-winning opera, Angel's Bone. Following its Manchester premiere at Aviva Studios earlier this year, the production transfers to the London Coliseum for six performances running from 16th to 31st October 2026.
Directed by Kip Williams, the opera explores themes of human trafficking and modern-day slavery. The story follows Mr. and Mrs. X.E., a struggling couple who discover two wounded angels in their garden. What begins as an act of rescue quickly turns into a portrait of greed, exploitation, and abuse as the pair profit from their captives.
Du Yun’s score blends medieval polyphony, punk, electronics, chamber music, and cabaret, featuring a libretto by Royce Vavrek. Conductor Baldur Brönnimann leads the Orchestra of ENO in the pit, joining a creative team that includes set and costume designer Marg Horwell, lighting designer Jack Knowles, video designer Ash J Woodward, and co-sound designers Dominic Bilkey and Joseph Reiser.
The original cast returns to reprise their roles for the London run. Mezzo-soprano Allison Cook plays Mrs. X.E., appearing alongside baritone Rodney Earl Clarke as Mr. X.E. Swedish vocalist Mariam Wallentin performs as Girl Angel, with tenor Matthew McKinney as Boy Angel, countertenor Keith Pun as Male Soprano, and the Kantos Chamber Choir returning as guest vocal ensemble.
