Sony Pictures Entertainment and Sonia Friedman Productions have announced The Popinjay Cavalier, a brand-new swashbuckling stage comedy written and directed by Quentin Tarantino. Marking the Oscar-winning filmmaker’s debut as a playwright, the production will open at London’s Phoenix Theatre on 18th March 2027, following preview performances beginning 23rd February, and is scheduled to run through 13th June.
Three-time Academy Award nominee Sacha Baron Cohen will star in the title role. Set in 1830s Europe, the play is described as a rambunctious comedy of deception and disguise inspired by classic Hollywood swashbucklers and the grand theatrical epics of stage and screen. The story brings Tarantino’s signature wit, heightened romance, and bold storytelling to the West End stage.
Expressing his excitement about the project, Tarantino noted that he is keen to give London theatregoers a great night out. Baron Cohen added that working with Tarantino was an immediate yes, sharing his delight at making his West End debut alongside the acclaimed director.
Producers Sonia Friedman and Tom Rothman highlighted the dynamic energy of the production, celebrating the creative collaboration between Tarantino, Baron Cohen, and an extensive team of actors, fencers, acrobats, and musicians. The creative team joining Tarantino includes scenic and costume designer Tom Pye, lighting designer Natasha Chivers, sound designer Ian Dickinson, fight director Philip d’Orleans, action coordinator Sam Lyon-Behan, and composer Tim Phillips.
Tickets for the strictly limited run go on sale today, starting at £25, with over 16,000 tickets priced under £50 available across the season. Full casting for the West End run will be announced in due course.
