The Royal Shakespeare Company production of George R. R. Martin’s Game of Thrones: The Mad King will transfer to London for a spectacular West End run in 2027.
Adapted by playwright Duncan Macmillan and directed by Dominic Cooke, the world premiere production debuted at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon on 8 August 2026. The initial season concludes today, 6 September 2026, following a completely sold-out run.
Set in the years immediately preceding the events of the original novels, the stage play explores a pivotal chapter of Westerosi history. The story chronicles the downfall of House Targaryen and the rising political tensions across the Seven Kingdoms, dramatising the events that led to the overthrow of King Aerys II Targaryen.
Commenting on the upcoming West End transfer, author and executive producer George R. R. Martin said: "I had an absolutely splendid time in Stratford upon Avon for the premier and am thrilled the production will be moving to London to share the experience with a wider audience. It promises to be an exhilarating journey."
The creative team behind the Royal Shakespeare Company production includes puppetry and movement directors Nick Barnes and Finn Caldwell, set designer Chloe Lamford, costume designer Georgia McGuinness, lighting designer Jon Clark, composer Will Stuart, and sound designer Tom Gibbons. Casting details for the 2027 London company, alongside the official venue and opening dates, are set to be announced in due course.
The London stage production is presented by producers Simon Painter, Tim Lawson, Mark Manuel, Sir Leonard Blavatnik, and Danny Cohen for Access Entertainment, alongside Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures on behalf of HBO.
