Bristol Old Vic’s Young SixSix ensemble returns to the stage with an ambitious new adaptation of Shakespeare's Macbeth, running from September 3 to 5 in the Weston Studio. Directed by Harry Gould and adapted collaboratively by the company, the production brings young artists from across Bristol together to explore power, ambition, and masculinity.
Young SixSix is an ensemble program at Bristol Old Vic designed to engage young people from local schools and youth clubs, particularly those who may not have previously considered participating in the arts. Through regular workshops, the initiative helps participants build creative skills, performance confidence, and career pathways within the cultural sector.
Previous Young SixSix members have progressed into Bristol Old Vic mainstage productions and advanced to train at drama institutions including RADA, Mountview, Rose Bruford, and the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.
The new adaptation reinterprets Macbeth through contemporary perspectives, examining how systemic violence and unchecked ambition affect the next generation. The cast features Ethan Dube as Macbeth, Laurentine Kamga as Lady Macbeth, David Ewolumi as Macduff, Khadijah Sawyers as Duncan, and Sherice Hannaway as Banquo.
Director Harry Gould noted that the production was devised directly with the cast, incorporating their personal questions and contemporary experiences into the text. Lucy Hunt, Director of Engagement at Bristol Old Vic, highlighted the production as a platform for emerging local talent and a space for young people to engage with classic theatre.
The creative team includes assistant director Kieran Graham, set and costume designer Holly Coulson, lighting designer George Bryant, sound designer and composer Rowan Evans, fight choreographer Timothy Dawson, and movement director Catriona Giles. Young SixSix receives ongoing support from the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation, The Harold Hyam Wingate Foundation, The Linbury Trust, and The Nisbet Trust.
Macbeth runs at the Weston Studio at Bristol Old Vic from 3 to 5 September 2026, with evening performances at 7:00 PM and a Saturday matinee at 2:00 PM. Tickets and further details are available via the official Bristol Old Vic website.
