Relative Motion, a gripping new relationship thriller by British-South African writer Stephanie Greenwood, is set to receive its world premiere at Southwark Playhouse Borough this autumn. Running in The Little auditorium from 11 November to 5 December 2026, the play explores the subtle, often imperceptible shifts through which psychological manipulation and coercive control can take root within a relationship.
Blending romantic comedy, psychological thriller, and black comedy, the production begins with a chance encounter on a London commuter train that blossoms into an unexpected romance between physics student Sam and aspiring novelist Paul. However, as their relationship gathers momentum, subtle compromises and shifting power dynamics emerge. These changes reveal the gradual, devastating development of coercive control that is often only recognized in hindsight.
Directed by award-winning British-German director Wiebke Green, the play uses Isaac Newton's laws of motion as a clever framework to examine love, memory, and perspective. The staging draws unexpected parallels between physical momentum, collisions, and reactions, and the emotional forces that shape human connections. Green, who trained at the Orange Tree Theatre and under Katie Mitchell, has previously directed acclaimed productions including a New York Times Critic's Pick.
The project is a highly personal one for playwright Stephanie Greenwood, who conceived the idea while observing her surroundings during a turbulent period in her own life. "The most frightening thing about coercive control is that it slowly erodes your confidence, judgment, and sense of self without you realising," Greenwood explained. She expressed her desire for the audience to fully root for and fall in love with Sam and Paul before their bond begins to fracture, making the warning signs much more impactful.
Co-produced by Very Rascals Productions and Feuille Dooley Productions, the show features a creative team dedicated to bringing fearless new writing to the stage. Tickets are now on sale for the strictly limited run, which includes a special press night performance scheduled for Tuesday 17 November 2026.
