By Royal Appointment, the highly anticipated debut stage play from acclaimed screenwriter and novelist Daisy Goodwin, is set to embark on a major new national tour. Produced by Daniel Schumann, Lee Dean, and the Cambridge Arts Theatre, the brand-new production will be directed by Anthony Banks and features a stellar cast of veteran British acting talent. The upcoming touring schedule officially launches at the Cambridge Arts Theatre on 21 September 2026, running through 3 October, before visiting prominent venues across Nottingham, Chelmsford, York, Chichester, Edinburgh, and Canterbury.
The narrative serves as a funny, poignant, and celebratory behind-the-scenes exploration of the late Queen Elizabeth II, tracking her relationship with her most influential confidante: her working-class Dresser. While the monarch remains famously detached from the modern fashion industry, she weaponizes her daily attire to communicate her true political and personal opinions—charming world leaders through vibrant coats while subtly reprimanding family members via precisely selected headwear. The story details how this unlikely pairing crafted the public image of the world's longest-reigning monarch, and how the Dresser navigates the fragile, volatile reality of being a royal favorite on borrowed time.
Distinguished stage and screen actress Jane Asher leads the company as The Queen, bringing an extensive theatrical pedigree that spans major roles at the National Theatre, Royal Court, and the West End. Starring alongside her as The Dresser is Samantha Womack, widely recognized for her long-running television role in EastEnders as well as her recent leading stage performances in The Addams Family and Dear England. The principal lineup is completed by Downton Abbey star David Robb as The Designer and Matthew Cottle as The Milliner.
The production features scenic and costume design by Jonathan Fensom, meticulously recreating the private quarters of the royal household. The tour marks Goodwin's latest theatrical endeavor following her 2026 adaptation of Victoria: A Queen Unbound at the Watermill Theatre, expanding on the historical expertise she established as the creator and writer of ITV’s hit drama series Victoria. Tickets for the initial autumn and winter dates are available now.
