Hackney Empire has officially put tickets on sale for its 2026 Artist Development Programme (ADP) production, Threads. Produced in collaboration with Ameena Hamid, the newly devised show will take over the iconic venue's main stage for two performances on Saturday, 8 August 2026. The production is created and performed by a company of over 50 young artists and creatives aged 14 to 19, continuing the theatre's long-standing dedication to championing marginalised voices and building meaningful pathways into the creative arts.
The narrative of Threads unfolds in the heart of a close-knit community inside a small tailoring shop called Snip & Stitch. At the centre of this bustling meeting point is Mama, the steady, protective force who keeps the neighbourhood connected while quietly sidelining her own aspirations. Through fabric fittings and everyday conversations, the production highlights the kindness, conflicts, and quiet resilience of the local residents. However, as the wider textile industry shifts, the shop faces mounting modern pressures, forcing the community to confront what they must hold onto and what needs to change.
Critically acclaimed director Stef O’Driscoll returns to helm the project following her work on the 2025 ADP production, The Kindling. Known for steering contemporary stories with deep socio-political hearts, O’Driscoll leads a professional team that uniquely blends seasoned industry experts with returning ADP alumni now forging independent careers. Former participants taking on pivotal production roles include writer-in-residence Joelthomas Coleallison, movement director Khalif Shakeil Edwards, and designer Hannah Schlenker.
The wider creative team boasts extensive credits across major West End hits like The Lion King and TINA – The Tina Turner Musical, alongside collaborative work with the National Theatre and the Royal Court. As Hackney Empire prepares for its landmark 125th anniversary under its current central vision, Threads serves as a showcase for the venue's future. Tickets for the upcoming summer performances are available now on a flexible, inclusive "Choose What You Pay" basis.
