The Leeds Conservatoire has officially announced the return of the Leeds Theatre Festival, presenting a massive summer celebration of innovative storytelling and fresh creative voices. Taking place from July 6 to July 18, 2026, the distinctive event will occupy the institution's main campus, situated right in the heart of the city’s vibrant cultural quarter.
The ambitious two-week festival is set to showcase over 40 distinct theatrical productions. The diverse programming features an eclectic mix of original drama, brand-new contemporary musicals, play readings, comedy, dance works, and scratch performances. The lineup combines the creative output of emerging local artists, established industry partner organizations, and students from the conservatoire’s prestigious School of Drama.
Festival producer Scott Harrison, who serves as the Postgraduate Coordinator at the School of Drama, highlighted the event as a vital engine for industry innovation. The conservatoire notably runs five specialized Master’s courses, including the UK's only MA in Musical Theatre Writing. The festival serves as a collaborative sandbox where local and national professionals can unite with students to test contemporary ideas, exploring social commentary, personal journeys, and imaginative new worlds.
This year's lineup includes full-scale presentations of new contemporary musicals from visiting writers, including Hollie Cassar’s YOU, ME, & the rest of the world and Lizzie Lawton’s Life Behind Bars. Additionally, the acclaimed Red Ladder Theatre Company will partner with the festival to present a rehearsed reading series featuring six brand-new plays. Audiences will also have access to free-of-charge programming, highlighted by an innovative stage adaptation of Stephen Chbosky’s bestselling novel, The Perks of Being a Wallflower.
Performances will take place across various dedicated theatrical spaces within the Leeds Conservatoire campus. Demonstrating a strong commitment to keeping live performance affordable, individual show tickets are priced at just £8, while comprehensive full-day festival passes are available for £10. The complete festival programme schedule and public ticket bookings are accessible now through the official Leeds Conservatoire website.
