Fierylight and Little Angel Theatre’s Olivier Award-nominated musical adaptation of The Smartest Giant in Town will officially return to London’s West End for the upcoming Christmas season. Based on the bestselling children's book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, the acclaimed stage production is scheduled to run at St Martin’s Theatre from December 9, 2026, to January 3, 2027, performing in tandem with the historic production of The Mousetrap.
The heart-warming adaptation brings the beloved picture book to life as a magical musical adventure. The story follows George, a giant who wishes he wasn't the scruffiest resident in town. After visiting a fancy boutique, he leaves with a spectacular new outfit: smart trousers, a crisp shirt, a striped tie, and shiny shoes. However, as George travels home, he encounters various animals in desperate need of assistance—and pieces of his newly acquired wardrobe. The production features a vibrant array of puppets and catchy original songs to explore core themes of community kindness, generosity, and friendship.
First published by Macmillan Children’s Books in 2002, the source material stems from the UK’s leading picture book partnership, whose global literary collaborations have sold over 75 million copies worldwide. Author Julia Donaldson expressed her delight regarding the theatrical revival, noting that the themes of selflessness remain deeply relevant today. She praised the creative team's faithful translation of Scheffler's distinctive illustrations and the engaging musical compositions that have charmed family audiences since the show's initial debut in 2022.
The creative team is led by Little Angel Theatre’s Artistic Director Samantha Lane, who adapted and directed the piece, alongside award-winning composer Barb Jungr, who provided the score. The production features set and costume designs by Kate Bunce, specialized puppet fabrication by Judith Hope, and lighting design by Sherry Coenen. Production leaders stated they are thrilled to bring the uplifting story back to the heart of London, offering families an ideal festive theater outing. Performance schedules and ticket bookings are available through the official production website.
