Following its massive critical success and a recent Olivier Award victory for Best Entertainment or Comedy Play, the hit production Oh, Mary! at London's Trafalgar Theatre has officially extended its booking period into 2027. Production handlers have also confirmed that the show's Tony Award-winning creator and original star, Cole Escola, will arrive in the West End to reprise their iconic leading role for a strictly limited four-week engagement starting on 20 July 2026.
The acclaimed historical satire currently stars beloved British comedian and actress Catherine Tate as Mary Todd Lincoln. Audiences still have a final opportunity to witness Tate’s celebrated take on the historical figure, as she is scheduled to continue her leading run at the Trafalgar Theatre until 18 July, just before Escola takes over the campy, tragicomic mantle.
Oh, Mary! presents an uproariously dark comedy that follows a miserable, suffocated Mary Todd Lincoln in the chaotic weeks leading up to the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Spanning a fast-paced, 80-minute single act, the narrative delves into the forgotten life and thwarted dreams of Mrs. Lincoln through a chaotic lens of unrequited yearning, severe alcoholism, and deeply suppressed desires. Escola wrote the piece to examine the historical figure's legacy, jokingly describing the narrative approach as history viewed through the lens of an idiot.
The production originally took Broadway by storm, where it was declared one of the best theatrical comedies in years by The New York Times. The show subsequently went on to receive prestigious Tony Awards, including Best Leading Actor in a Play for Escola's breakout performance and Best Direction of a Play for director Sam Pinkleton.
The creative team has launched a priority registration portal on their official website, allowing theatergoers to sign up for early ticket access to Escola’s brief four-week summer residency. Tickets for the newly extended 2027 performance dates are also available through the main Trafalgar Theatre box office.
