Theatres Trust has officially announced an outstanding and highly influential panel of judges for its inaugural Great British Theatres Awards. Launched to commemorate the trust's landmark fiftieth anniversary, the prestigious panel brings together leading voices from the worlds of architecture, engineering, theatre-making, accessibility, urban planning, and cultural leadership.

Unlike traditional ceremonies that focus on performers, these awards shine a spotlight on the physical buildings and venues that make creativity, community, and culture possible across the United Kingdom. Nominations from theatres, cultural organizations, and local communities are currently open, with a strict submission deadline set for Thursday, June 11, 2026.

The newly appointed judging panel features a diverse array of industry experts. It includes global placemaking pioneer Mark Davy, former City of London Chief Planning Officer Annie Hampson OBE, and Little Theatre Guild Vice-Chair Debbie Hibberd. They are joined by award-winning community director Emily Lim, corporate strategist Sara Rajeswaran, and disability equality advocate Michèle Taylor MBE. Rounding out the panel are acclaimed West End actor and author Obioma Ugoala, experienced heritage architect Nicola Walls, and Buro Happold partner Andrew Wylie.

The awards scheme features ten open competitive categories recognizing excellence in venue infrastructure, including Great New Build, Great Renovation, Great Green Theatre, and Great Community Connection. Additionally, the panel will personally select two specialized honors: the Great British Theatre 2026 award and a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Joshua McTaggart, CEO of Theatres Trust, expressed immense pride in the assembled panel, noting that the extraordinary initial response from every corner of the UK underscores the vital role these spaces play in social and cultural life.

Following the close of applications in June, an official shortlist of nominees will be revealed to the public in September. The final winners are scheduled to be announced during the celebratory inaugural ceremony at Central Hall Westminster on Monday, November 2, 2026.
