Witzend Productions and Charing Cross Theatre Productions have officially released stunning production images for the highly anticipated world premiere of the new musical, Dark of the Moon. Based on the classic 1941 play by Howard D. Richardson and William Berney, the production is currently playing its strictly limited engagement at London's Charing Cross Theatre, running from May 18th until Saturday, August 8, 2026. A national press night has been officially scheduled for Tuesday, May 26th.
Set against the dramatic backdrop of the Smoky Mountains, Dark of the Moon is a spellbinding supernatural tale that explores the clash between a charming rural Appalachian town and a mystical world of witches and warlocks. The narrative follows Barbara Allen, a human girl, and John, a curious witch-boy, who defy their polarized communities to build a life together. The timeless story examines small-town prejudices and the enduring power of love, asking whether the young couple can truly conquer the haunting deal they forged under the dark of the moon.
The theatrical production is directed by Georgie Rankcom, known for acclaimed stagings of The Frogs and Anyone Can Whistle. The musical features a book by Emmy Award nominee Jonathan Prince, with an original score crafted by Grammy Award-winning and multi-platinum songwriters Lindy Robbins, Dave Bassett, and Steve Robson. The collaborative songwriting team has infused the production with a distinct blend of country, bluegrass, and contemporary rock to audibly reflect the conflicting worlds of the characters.
The world premiere cast is led by Glenn Adamson as John, the Witch Boy, and Lauren Jones as Barbara Allen. They are supported by a powerhouse ensemble including Sue Appleby, Josie Benson, Jordan Broatch, Martin Callaghan, Sophia Duncan, David-Michael Johnson, Thomas-Lee Kidd, Al Knott, Kiah Lindsay, Gemma Maclean, Wills Mercado, Samuel Murray, Gary Turner, and Appolilly Szwarc. Onstage swings Will Foggin, Vieve Hamilton, and Nick Wyschna complete the stellar lineup.
Loosely inspired by the traditional Scottish folk ballad "Barbara Allen," the original 1940s play has a rich theatrical lineage, attracting legendary directors like Sir Peter Brook and iconic actors Paul Newman and Cicely Tyson over the decades. The story has recently re-entered the global cultural conversation following prominent creative references in the hit Netflix series Stranger Things and its successful West End stage play, The First Shadow. Tickets for the spellbinding musical are now available to purchase via the official box office channels.
