Brighton Fringe has officially launched with a vibrant opening weekend, marking the beginning of a month-long celebration of creativity across the city. Running until May 31, 2026, the festival is now in its 21st year and continues to serve as a vital platform for both local and international artists to showcase "the weird, wild and wonderful".

The May bank holiday delivered several standout moments, including a unique performance by the musical cabaret C’est Magnifique—winner of the 2025 International Touring award—held within the Brighton i360 tower. The i360 also hosted Mile Die Club, an immersive murder mystery dining experience set against panoramic city views. Additionally, pop-up stages launched at the Caravanserai and SpiegelGardens venues, providing spaces for impromptu performances throughout the month.

As the third-largest Fringe festival in the world, the 2026 event features over 850 events across 150 venues. The festival remains deeply rooted in the community, with more than 30% of the program produced by companies based in Brighton & Hove.

Upcoming theater and comedy highlights include:

Jonny Woo's Surburbia: A blend of storytelling, drag, and burlesque.

MAN!FEST: A Boy Band Fantasy: A drag musical comedy following a boy band’s second world tour.

NIUSIA: An award-winning exploration of identity based on the memories of a Holocaust survivor.

Police Cops: The Original: High-energy physical comedy backed by 80s hits.

The Cycling Man: A character study from Drag King Kathy Maniura.

Executive Director Jonathan Maydew praised the opening as a "true celebration" of the city's diversity. With hundreds of events remaining, the festival offers various accessible options, including free shows, affordable tickets, and "pay-what-you-can" performances. Brighton Fringe continues its commitment to helping the arts flourish by encouraging performers to take risks and engage new audiences throughout May.
