This May, Bristol Old Vic—the oldest continuously working theatre in the English-speaking world—invites the city to celebrate a remarkable milestone: 260 years of creativity, heritage, and community. Since opening its doors in 1766, the theatre has hosted legendary performers such as Daniel Day-Lewis and Olivia Colman. To mark this landmark anniversary, the venue is pulling back the curtain for a week of inclusive events designed to turn the historic building into a vibrant party for all Bristolians.

The celebrations reach a high point on Saturday, 30 May, with the 260 Silent Disco. For one night only, the iconic stage is transformed into a dancefloor, allowing guests to party surrounded by the breathtaking 260-year-old auditorium. For a £5 entry fee (which includes a free drink), attendees can choose between three DJs battling across wireless channels. It is a rare opportunity to stand where theatre history was made while creating brand-new memories.

The festivities kick off earlier in the week with a free Family Day Party on Wednesday, 27 May. The entire building will be activated with immersive adventures, including a time-traveling "birthday quest" performance and live music from Mini Attack, who will perform hits spanning from 1766 to 2026. Activities include crown-making crafts in Coopers’ Hall, a sensory space for relaxation, and a building-wide trail to find "missing birthday guests."

The celebration extends beyond the theatre walls with The Great Bristol Old Vic Treasure Hunt. Throughout May, 260 commemorative wooden coins will be hidden at landmarks and community hubs across Bristol. Those lucky enough to find a memento can keep the anniversary token and claim a free birthday ice cream at the theatre bar before the end of June.

Artistic Director Nancy Medina emphasized that the milestone is about connection: "We really wanted this celebration to be filled with fun and joy—a true party atmosphere for the people of Bristol, who are at the heart of our story."
