The Marylebone Theatre has announced a major theatrical event for this autumn: the world premiere of Tartuffe (Remixed), a contemporary adaptation of Molière’s satirical masterpiece. The production stars the acclaimed Mark Rylance in the title role and is written and directed by Darren Raymond, Artistic Director of the award-winning drama charity Intermission Youth.
In this bold reimagining, Molière’s classic critique of religious hypocrisy is relocated to a contemporary African-Caribbean family household. The adaptation explores the tension between faith and deception through a unique "remixed" lens, where the original verse meets the rhythmic cadences of modern cultural sounds. Rylance stars as a corrupt English missionary who infiltrates the family dynamic, bringing both biting humor and modern pathos to the 17th-century text.
The production marks a significant creative union between a master of the craft and the next generation of talent. Rylance, a long-term trustee and advocate for Intermission Youth, will share the stage with members of the Intermission Ensemble, a professional company of the charity’s graduates.
Tartuffe (Remixed) reunites Rylance with the legendary set and costume designer ULTZ, whose previous collaborations with the actor include the landmark productions of Jerusalem and Much Ado About Nothing. Director Darren Raymond arrives at the project following his 2025 Sam Wanamaker Award win at Shakespeare’s Globe, further solidifying the production’s elite creative pedigree.
Alexander J. Gifford, Artistic Director of the Marylebone Theatre, expressed his excitement: "Mark was born to play Tartuffe, and I have no doubt he will deliver another iconic stage performance. The result is a brilliantly funny, surprisingly poignant new play."
Produced by Patrick Myles and David Luff—the team behind the West End hit Dr. Strangelove—this strictly limited run celebrates Rylance’s return to the Marylebone following his sell-out residency in 2024.
Priority sign-ups for first access to tickets are now live at the theatre's official website. Given Rylance’s previous sell-out success and the unique nature of this collaboration, theatre-goers are encouraged to register early for what is set to be one of the most original versions of Molière ever staged.
