Leeds Heritage Theatres’ Learning & Engagement programme is set to dominate the stage this summer, as its two flagship youth companies—Leeds Actors in Training (LAIT) and Leeds Grand Youth Theatre (LGYT)—unveil their highly anticipated end-of-year productions. The season promises a compelling contrast of classical tragedy and beloved musical theatre, all hosted at the historic City Varieties Music Hall.
Kicking off the season on Friday, 26 June, LAIT presents a bold, ensemble-led adaptation of Medea. Designed for performers aged 18–25, LAIT is an intensive vocational programme that prepares young creatives for the professional industry. Under the direction of Artistic Director Lizi Patch, this production reimagines Euripides’ brutal tragedy for a contemporary audience.
In a unique creative twist, the role of Medea will be shared among four performers. "Medea is a character who has been fiercely judged across centuries, yet her story still feels startlingly modern," says Patch. This abridged adaptation explores complex themes of betrayal and power, utilizing an original score and inventive storytelling to examine the perception of women’s anger.
Following in July, LGYT returns to the City Varieties stage from 23–26 July with the Disney classic Beauty and the Beast. LGYT serves young people aged 8–18, providing an inclusive environment that fosters confidence, empathy, and creative skill-building through weekly sessions at The Grand.
The production features the iconic songs of Alan Menken, Howard Ashman, and Tim Rice, bringing the Academy Award-winning story to life with a full cast of local talent. Rachel Lythe, Head of Learning, highlights that these summer shows are the culmination of a year-long journey. "Our training focuses on developing skills and a sense of community," Lythe explains. "It is a delight to see this come together on stage."
By providing inclusive pathways into both performance and technical theatre, Leeds Heritage Theatres continues to support the next generation of creatives. Tickets for both Medea and Beauty and the Beast are available now via the Leeds Heritage Theatres website.
