Pitlochry Festival Theatre has announced a major highlight for its landmark 75th anniversary year: the UK première of the original musical CEILIDH. Staged at the Pitlochry Town Hall from October 7–17, 2026, the production marks a cornerstone of Alan Cumming’s inaugural season as Artistic Director.
A Tony Award-Winning Vision
The production brings international prestige to the Highlands, directed and choreographed by the Tony Award-winning Sam Pinkleton. Known for his acclaimed work on Broadway’s Oh, Mary! and the West End’s The Rocky Horror Show, Pinkleton is set to transform the traditional town hall gathering into a high-energy theatrical experience.
More Than Just a Dance
Created by the award-winning Scottish writing duo Noisemaker (Scott Gilmour and Claire McKenzie), CEILIDH invites the audience to participate in one of Scotland’s oldest traditions. Led by a stomping folk band and a lively caller, the show blends the communal joy of a real-life ceilidh—complete with shared songs and a "dram or due"—with a deeply moving narrative.
As the reels build and the dancing intensifies, a story of family, love, and legacy begins to unfold. The musical explores why this specific gathering matters more than most, celebrating the profound power of community and the cultural heartbeat of Scotland.
Championing Scottish Talent
Artistic Director Alan Cumming has expressed immense pride in the production’s cast, which will feature a vibrant ensemble of young Scottish talent.
"It is a joyous, irreverent, heart-pounding celebration of Scotland’s culture," the theatre shared in its announcement, emphasizing the importance of nurturing the next generation of performers during this anniversary year.
The production is a Pitlochry Festival Theatre original, presented by special arrangement with Grove Entertainment, Barbara Whitman, and Trafalgar Theatre Productions.
