As the global community celebrates World Theatre Day, leading disabled-led company Vital Xposure is spotlighting its pioneering VX Labs programme. This three-year research initiative, supported by Arts Council England and the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, is moving accessibility from the sidelines to the center of the creative process.

Under the leadership of Artistic Director Josh Elliott, the London-based company is proving that disabled-led practice doesn't just fulfill a requirement—it enriches the art form. Through four distinct "Labs," Vital Xposure has generated findings that are currently influencing the wider UK theatre sector.

Innovation Through VX Labs

The programme has explored several cutting-edge areas of performance:

Creative Captioning: A collaboration with Phizzical Productions examined bilingual captions in Hindi, Punjabi, and Urdu. The research found that embedding captions into the writing and rehearsal process transforms them into an artistic tool that enriches storytelling for all audiences.

Decolonising Disability: In partnership with Bristol Old Vic, this lab addressed the "double exclusion" faced by Global Majority disabled artists, leading to the formation of the new collective, Aggressively Civil.

BSL-Originated Scripts: Working with Sheffield Theatres, a Deaf-led team experimented with visual authorship, moving toward commissioning a production originated entirely in British Sign Language rather than translated from English.

Youth Theatre: A lab with Z-arts in Manchester focused on making theatre for young people more imaginative and playful by involving children directly in the creative process.

From Research to the Stage

Vital Xposure is already applying these insights to two major R&D projects: When I See Blue, an adaptation of Lily Bailey’s book about neurodivergence and OCD, and Chouette, a feminist poetic fable by Madeleine Farnhill.

“Access and disabled leadership don’t limit the artform – they open up richer possibilities for what theatre can be,” says Elliott. By prioritizing the artist's journey and fostering a space for experimentation without the immediate pressure of a finished product, Vital Xposure is setting a new standard for high-quality, inclusive new writing.
