The National Theatre has today unveiled the full 35-strong cast for the triumphant return of its global phenomenon, War Horse. Nearly two decades after its world premiere, the production—the most successful play in the National’s history—will return to the Olivier stage from 16 May until 30 July 2026.

A Global Sensation Comes Home

Based on Michael Morpurgo’s beloved novel and adapted by Nick Stafford, War Horse has captivated over 8.8 million people across 15 countries. It returns to London following an acclaimed tour of the UK and Ireland, ready to introduce its breathtaking puppetry and emotional depth to a new generation of theatergoers.

The story follows young Albert Narracott and his horse, Joey, through the devastating landscapes of the First World War. When Joey is sold to the cavalry and shipped to the trenches of France, Albert embarks on a treacherous journey from rural Devon to the front lines to bring his companion home.

The 2026 Company

The revival features Tom Sturgess as Albert Narracott, leading a massive ensemble that brings the war-torn era to life. The cast includes:

Stephen Beckett (Ted Narracott/Strauss)
Jo Castleton (Rose Narracott)
Nicholas Khan (Arthur Narracott/Brandt)
Sally Swanson (The Singer)

At the heart of the production are the life-sized horses created by the Handspring Puppet Company. The intricate puppetry team—comprising 15 specialized performers—includes Rianna Ash, Alexandra Donnachie, and Matthew Lawrence, who work in three-person teams to mimic the breath, weight, and soul of the equine protagonists.

Masterful Production

Original director Tom Morris leads the revival team alongside director Katie Henry and movement director Toby Sedgwick. The production remains a technical marvel, featuring Rae Smith’s iconic designs and Adrian Sutton’s stirring score.

War Horse has won more than 25 major awards, including the Tony for Best Play. With the novel now translated into 44 languages, the play remains a staggering testament to the power of courage and friendship.
