The Almeida Theatre has officially announced a one-week extension for its highly anticipated production of Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House. This modern reimagining by Critics’ Circle Theatre Award-winning playwright Anya Reiss (The Seagull, Becoming Elizabeth) will now run through Saturday 23 May 2026.
Directed by Joe Hill-Gibbins (Ghosts, The Tragedy of King Richard the Second), this production marks the return of Romola Garai to the Almeida following her Olivier Award-winning turn in The Years. Garai stars as Nora, a woman whose seemingly idyllic domestic life is built on a foundation of precarious secrets.
Renegotiating the Contract
Reiss’ version breathes contemporary fire into Ibsen’s subversive domestic tragedy. Moving away from 19th-century drawing rooms, the play asks a pointedly modern question: "If I get run over tomorrow, how are you paying off the Amex?"
The story follows Nora and Torvald, whose marriage vows are treated as a binding contract. However, as scandal threatens to demolish their carefully curated reality, the couple is forced to renegotiate the terms of their existence. In this provocative drama, money, sex, and power are laid bare as nothing remains off the table.
A Star-Studded Creative Team
Joining Garai is an exceptional cast featuring James Corrigan, Olivier Huband, Tom Mothersdale, and Thalissa Teixeira. The production boasts a world-class creative team, including set designer Hyemi Shin, costume designer Alex Lowde, lighting by Lee Curran, and sound design by Gareth Fry.
