The play stars Hugh Bonneville (Downton Abbey, Paddington) as the legendary author C.S. Lewis. The story follows Lewis, the celebrated mind behind The Chronicles of Narnia, whose orderly, academic existence in Oxford is famously upended by the arrival of American poet Joy Davidman, portrayed by Maggie Siff (Mad Men, Sons of Anarchy). What begins as a cerebral meeting of minds evolves into a transformative and fragile romance that challenges Lewis's long-held beliefs about suffering and faith.
A Stellar Supporting Cast
The production features a formidable ensemble, including Jeff Rawle (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) as C.S. Lewis's brother, Warnie, and Tony Jayawardena (Nye) as Rev. Harry Harrington. The cast is rounded out by Timothy Watson as Professor Christopher Riley, alongside a talented group including Rebecca Blackstone and Leighton Pugh. The role of Joy’s eight-year-old son, Douglas, is alternated by Ayrton English, Nathan Jago, and Louis Wilkins.

Originally a BAFTA Award-winning TV movie, Shadowlands has enjoyed a storied history as an Evening Standard Award-winning play and a Tony-nominated Broadway hit. Its 1993 cinematic adaptation, directed by Richard Attenborough and starring Anthony Hopkins, further cemented its place as a masterpiece of British storytelling.
Produced by Jonathan Church Theatre Productions, Trafalgar Theatre Productions, and Tilted, this revival features stunning design by Peter McKintosh and lighting by Howard Harrison, capturing the atmospheric beauty of 1950s Oxford.
