This spring, the Royal Opera House celebrates a historic milestone as acclaimed conductor Sir Mark Elder marks the 50th anniversary of his debut with the company. In a poetic turn of events, Elder returns to the podium to lead Verdi’s Rigoletto—the very same masterpiece that launched his illustrious tenure at the House in 1976.

A Legacy of Excellence

Over the past half-century, Elder has become a cornerstone of the Royal Opera, masterfully interpreting a vast repertoire ranging from the dramatic heights of Wagner and Strauss to the lyrical beauty of Rossini and Puccini. His return for this anniversary run, performing from March 25 to April 23, is not merely a nostalgic nod to the past but a testament to his enduring influence on British opera.

A Modern Morality Play

The production features Oliver Mears' darkly elegant staging, which reimagines Verdi’s tale of vengeance and sacrifice as a modern morality play. Pitting absolute power against fragile innocence, the production is set within a world of contemporary decadence. The sleek, atmospheric aesthetic is brought to life through Simon Lima Holdsworth’s set design and Ilona Karas’s costumes, creating a stark backdrop for one of opera’s most tragic narratives.

World-Class Casting

Elder will guide two exceptional international casts. The opening performances feature George Petean in the title role alongside Aida Garifullina as Gilda. The production also serves as a platform for rising stars, with Royal Opera debuts from tenor Iván Ayón Rivas as the Duke of Mantua and bass William Thomas as Sparafucile.

From mid-April, the baton passes to a second ensemble, featuring Daniel Luis de Vicente in his House debut as Rigoletto. The role of Gilda will be shared by Rosa Feola and Robyn Allegra Parton, while the legendary Willard White joins the cast as Count Monterone.

Inclusive Artistry

In line with the Royal Opera’s commitment to accessibility, all performances are audio-described. The season also includes a Touch Tour on April 8 and a BSL-interpreted performance on April 15, ensuring this landmark celebration is open to all.
