The Welsh National Theatre and Rose Theatre have unveiled the first production images for Thornton Wilder’s Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece, Our Town. This landmark staging marks the inaugural production for the newly launched Welsh National Theatre, bringing together an all-Welsh cast and creative team to reinterpret the American classic for modern audiences.
Starring internationally acclaimed actor Michael Sheen (Nye, Good Omens) as the Stage Manager, the production is directed by Swansea-born Francesca Goodridge, with award-winning screenwriter Russell T Davies (Doctor Who, It’s a Sin) serving as Creative Associate.
A Welsh Lens on a Universal Classic
While traditionally set in New Hampshire, this production views Grover’s Corners through a Welsh lens, emphasizing close-knit community and the "quiet beauty of everyday life." Early critical reviews from its opening in Swansea have been overwhelmingly positive, with the Financial Times hailing it as a "joyous, tender staging" and The Times praising Sheen’s "gravitas, wit, and soul."
The 18-strong all-Welsh ensemble features Yasemin Özdemir and Peter Devlin as the young leads Emily Webb and George Gibbs, alongside Rhodri Meilir, Sian Reese-Williams, and Nia Roberts.
