With just weeks to go until its West End premiere, rehearsal images have been released today for the highly anticipated musical adaptation of The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry. Based on Rachel Joyce’s multi-million-selling novel, the production begins performances at the Theatre Royal Haymarket on 29 January.
The newly released photographs by Matt Crockett offer a "pitch perfect" glimpse into the rehearsal room, where stars Mark Addy (Game of Thrones) and Jenna Russell (Sunday in the Park with George) are recreating their acclaimed roles as Harold and Maureen Fry. Joining them is Noah Mullins as The Balladeer, leading a versatile ensemble that brings Harold’s 600-mile journey to life.
A Story of Hope and Redemption
Adapted for the stage by Rachel Joyce herself, the musical follows Harold Fry, an ordinary man who leaves his home in Devon to walk to Berwick-upon-Tweed to save an old friend. What begins as a simple letter delivery transforms into a profound pilgrimage of love and second chances.
The production features music and lyrics by the chart-topping indie artist Passenger (famed for the hit "Let Her Go"). His "ravishing score" (as described by The Times) is directed by Katy Rudd, known for her magical work on The Ocean at the End of the Lane.
From Page to Stage
Rachel Joyce expressed her delight at the show finding its home in the West End: "I never imagined, when I first wrote the book, that it would become a musical one day. Passenger’s music and lyrics are perfect for this story of hope, as is Katy Rudd’s magical direction."
The creative team is a "who’s who" of theatrical talent, including choreographer Tom Jackson Greaves and lighting designer Paule Constable. For fans eager for a preview, Passenger’s concept album for the show, One For The Road, is currently available for streaming.
