The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) production of The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind is set for its highly anticipated West End premiere at @sohoplace, running for a strictly limited engagement from April 25 to July 18, 2026. This bold and uplifting new musical, presented by Kenny Wax Limited and Chuchu Nwagu Productions in association with Nica Burns, follows its initial run at the Swan Theatre in Stratford-Upon-Avon.
The musical is adapted from the memoir by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer, which was also the inspiration for the 2019 film. In a major creative boost, actor and director Chiwetel Ejiofor, who wrote, directed, and starred in the movie, joins the stage production as a Creative Associate and Executive Producer. Ejiofor shared his delight, stating, “William’s incredible experiences are a powerful testament to resilience and hope. It’s a narrative that remains both timeless and timely.”
Set in drought-stricken Malawi, the story follows 13-year-old William Kamkwamba, who, against the odds and the disbelief of his community, finds inspiration in library books and old machinery to build a windmill, determined to bring energy and life back to his village.
The production features a book and lyrics by Richy Hughes and music and lyrics by Tim Sutton. Directing the piece is former Bush Theatre Artistic Director Lynette Linton, who expressed excitement for the cast’s collaborative spirit, noting the production reflects the “spirit of community that lies at the heart of Wimbe.”
Alistair Nwachukwu originates the title role of William Kamkwamba, leading a talented ensemble cast. RSC Co-Artistic Directors Daniel Evans and Tamara Harvey heralded the musical as a landmark moment in their tenure, expressing their delight at transferring the inspiring story to London.
Tickets for the West End run go on general sale from November 26.
