The National Theatre is kicking off its festive season early, offering a first glimpse into the rehearsal room for the much-loved family hit, Kendall Feaver’s acclaimed adaptation of Noel Streatfeild’s Ballet Shoes. As rehearsals begin on the South Bank, excitement mounts for the production’s return, which forms a highlight of Director and Co-CEO Indhu Rubasingham’s inaugural season.
The 'playful, graceful adaptation' (***** Financial Times) will run in the Olivier theatre from November 17, 2025, until February 21, 2026.
The story centers on three adopted sisters—Pauline, Petrova, and Posy—who are raised in a crumbling house and fight to pursue their individual dreams. Under the guidance of their guardian Sylvia and an eccentric cast of lodgers, they navigate a world where ambitions clash with reality, all while striving to keep their unique family intact. Praised for delighting audiences of all ages, the production has been hailed for springing “from page to stage with panache” (***** WhatsonStage).
Director Katy Rudd leads a stellar creative team, with choreography by Ellen Kane and design by Frankie Bradshaw and Samuel Wyer. The talented cast features Sienna Arif-Knights as Petrova, Nina Cassells as Pauline, and Scarlett Monahan as Posy Fossil. They are joined by Anoushka Lucas as Sylvia, Lesley Nicol as Nana, and a large, energetic ensemble.
The National Theatre is also renewing its collaboration with Coram, the UK's first children's charity specializing in adoption, throughout the run of Ballet Shoes. Recommended for ages 7 to 107, this celebrated show promises to be a moving and magical treat for the whole family this Christmas. Tickets are on sale now.
