Following a string of sold-out performances in Berlin, Hamburg, and a critically praised run at Brighton Fringe 2025, Kumar Muniandy is bringing his powerful solo play, "Second Class Queer," to the Camden and Edinburgh Fringe Festivals 2025. This deeply personal work, which has garnered multiple accolades, offers a radical and poetic reflection on queerness, race, grief, and the enduring legacy of colonialism.
"Second Class Queer" invites audiences into the world of Krishna, a queer Indian Malaysian man navigating Berlin's vibrant queer dating scene while grappling with the profound emotional weight of displacement and desire. Written, performed, designed, and produced by Muniandy himself, the play blends raw storytelling with theatrical intimacy, giving voice to queer lives often erased by history and silence.
The production has already received significant recognition, including a nomination for the Best New Show Award 2025 at Brighton Fringe, and being shortlisted for script submissions at prestigious institutions like the Royal Court and The Bush. It is also a recipient of Brighton Fringe's 2025 Mental Health Bursary and the Keep It Fringe Award 2025, highlighting its vital themes and impactful delivery.
"This work is a tribute, a protest, and an offering," Muniandy states, dedicating the play to Nhaveen, an 18-year-old Malaysian teenager who tragically lost his life in a suspected homophobic attack in 2017.
Critics have lauded the production: Andrew Kay of Latest TV described it as "perfectly formed, powerfully delivered, and worth seeing again and again," awarding it five stars. Brian Butler of Gscene also gave it five stars, praising it as "a terrific performance – full of humanity, honesty, and razor-sharp timing."
