Papatango and Park Theatre have announced the hotly anticipated world première of The Meat Kings! (Inc.) of Brooklyn Heights, the bold and darkly comic debut play by British-Irish playwright Hannah Doran, winner of the 2024 Papatango New Writing Prize. The production will run in Park200 at Park Theatre from 30 October to 29 November, with a press night on 4 November.

Selected from a record-breaking 1,589 submissions, Doran’s play was hailed for its fierce wit and razor-sharp take on modern labour, immigration, and ambition in America. Set in a struggling New York butcher shop, The Meat Kings! follows summer hire T as she navigates shifting alliances, workplace politics, and the brutal realities of a cutthroat job market. With the American Dream on the line, only the shrewdest will survive.

The production will be directed by Papatango’s Artistic Director George Turvey, whose previous work includes Shook (Sky Arts/National Tour), and the critically acclaimed Old Bridge, winner of an Olivier Award.

Now in its 16th year, the Papatango New Writing Prize remains the UK’s only playwriting award guaranteeing a full production, publication with Nick Hern Books, 8% royalties, and a £7,500 commission with developmental support. Previous winners have gone on to win BAFTAs, Olivier Awards, and international acclaim.

Turvey and Papatango Executive Director Chris Foxon shared their excitement: “Hannah’s play is startlingly ambitious, urgent, and funny. In today’s volatile America, it felt vital to stage a story like this — one that dares to dream big and challenge expectations.”

Park Theatre’s Artistic Director Jez Bond added, “Papatango’s mission mirrors our own. After their outstanding production last year, we’re thrilled to be partnering again to bring Hannah Doran’s exceptional voice to our stage.”

The Meat Kings! marks a major debut for Doran, a London-based playwright and bookseller with an MFA from NYU’s Tisch School. With her biting, thought-provoking writing, she’s one to watch.

Tickets and further casting details to be announced soon.
