Dazzling new dark comedy Boxed In premieres at the Old Red Lion Theatre
07 April 2025
“I have a question. If I'm so hard to be around; if you hate this room with the passion you claim; if you're this vibrant social butterfly, perpetually fascinated by everything and everyone you come into contact with... then why are you still here?”
From the bold imagination of emerging playwright Rebecca Weston Wright comes Boxed In, a vivid, surreal, and darkly comic new play that delves deep into the uncomfortable corners of the human psyche.
In a time where discussions around mental health are too often reduced to online soundbites, Boxed In dares to go deeper. This is a piece that does not shy away from the raw, the real, or the ridiculous—offering a rollercoaster of emotion that blends irreverent humour with aching vulnerability.
The play opens in a bleak, dismal room—a metaphorical limbo where A, a woman in the throes of grief, heartbreak, and existential confusion, must confront the gnawing voice in her head. That voice takes shape in the form of a simple wooden Box—a chillingly charismatic presence that embodies her most self-defeating thoughts. Part magician, part tormentor, part trickster therapist, the Box is both her captor and mirror.
As A grapples with the crushing weight of her past and an uncertain future, the question becomes not just how to silence the Box, but whether she should at all. What if the Box—dark as it is—has been protecting her all along?
Boxed In flips the script on the traditional one-woman play format, infusing it with unexpected theatricality and a dynamic second presence that reflects the push-and-pull of internal monologue. It’s an unflinching look at the conversations we have with ourselves when no one else is listening—both destructive and, at times, redemptive.
Prepare to laugh, cry, squirm and reflect as A stumbles, resists, and ultimately faces the daunting process of becoming whole again.
