Trafalgar Releasing is thrilled to announce that the cinema release of the Donmar Warehouse’s award-winning production of MACBETH has grossed over £2M globally in its first week. Starring David Tennant and Cush Jumbo, and directed by Max Webster, MACBETH was filmed live at the Donmar Warehouse in January 2024 before its sold-out West End transfer. This follows extraordinary success at the recent WhatsOnStage Awards where the play won three awards including Best Performer in A Play for David Tennant and Best Play Revival.

Co-produced by Donmar Warehouse and Trafalgar Releasing, and distributed by Trafalgar Releasing, MACBETH was No. 1 at the box office in the UK on 5 February, the day of release (more than £500K ahead of the No. 2 film, A Complete Unknown), with a gross of £791,605 and a per-screen average of £1,293 across 612 cinemas. It was No. 2 at the box office on Sunday and No. 4 for the opening weekend. The production has been screened in more than 1,000 cinemas globally including the UK, Ireland and the US, plus selected European countries. Screenings in Australia and Poland begin later this month with Spain following in April.

With a 100% Score on Rotten Tomatoes, the film capture of MACBETH is a hit with cinema audiences and critics alike. Screenings continue to sell out with exhibitors programming the release over the coming months. Full details are available at MacbethDonmarCinema.com.

Trafalgar Releasing’s CEO, Marc Allenby commented, ‘‘We’re delighted that MACBETH has grossed £2M globally at the box office in Week 1. This is a significant achievement in any genre, but outstanding for an Event Cinema release in the cultural space. With exhibitors booking encores and some international territories screening later, we’re looking forward to seeing how the release performs over the long-term. We’d also like to congratulate our partner, the Donmar Warehouse, and everyone involved with the play, for their well-deserved success at the WOS Awards.’

The Donmar Warehouse’s Artistic Director Tim Sheader and Executive Director Henny Finch added, “We are very proud of the continued success of our record-breaking production of Macbeth; from the Donmar, to the West End and now in cinemas around the world. It's thrilling that thousands of global audiences are getting to experience this very special production in their local cinema.”
