Tobias Kratzer’s production of Beethoven’s only opera, Fidelio, returns to The Royal Opera from 9 – 26 October 2024 on the Main Stage. Kratzer’s production, with designs by Rainer Sellmaier, lighting designs by Michael Bauer and video design by Manuel Braun combines revolutionary flair with a sharp, contemporary edge, asking the question: when does political inaction turn into complicity?

Former Jette Parker Artist Jennifer Davis leads the cast as Leonore, opposite Eric Cutler as Leonore’s wrongly imprisoned husband, Florestan. In his debut season, Dmitry Belosselskiy sings the role of Rocco, who additionally appears in Ted Huffman’s new production of Eugene Onegin as Prince Gremin (24 September – 14 October 2024).

The production is conducted by Alexander Soddy, who has previously conducted Salome (2022), Tannhäuser (2023) and Così fan tutte (2024) for The Royal Opera, and the cast is completed by Christina Gansch (Marzelline); Michael Gibson (Jaquino); Jochen Schmeckenbecher (Don Pizarro); Phillip Rhodes (Don Fernando); Siphe Kwani (First Prisoner); and Jamie Woollard (Second Prisoner). Gibson, Kwani and Woollard are former and current members of the Jette Parker Artist Programme, The Royal Opera’s highly sought-after programme for curious artists of exceptional talent who want to intensify their professional development and take their first steps on the international stage.

Runs on the Main Stage 9-26 October 2024
