Author, musician, actor, director, and filmmaker Lola Arias has been awarded the International Ibsen Award 2024.
Lola Arias is an author, theatre and film director. She has written and directed over twenty theater plays and two films and created several exhibitions and site-specific projects. Since 2007 she has worked in the field of documentary theatre, creating over a dozen plays in collaboration with people who have lived through different events or historical experiences.
– This award gives me hope and confidence to continue my work. It provides possibilities and recognizes the relevance of the projects I have been doing for over 20 years, says Lola Arias about the award.
In October, the audience can experience her latest work on the main stage of the National Theatre in Oslo. THE DAYS OUT THERE is a musical documentary theatre piece in which the roles are played by women and transgender individuals who have spent several years in Argentinian prisons and are now free.
The International Ibsen Award committee writes in their statement that “her theatre engages with contemporary society, without any intellectual dominance or arrogance”. "Lola Arias works in the spaces between — between film and theatre, music and performance, poetry and prose, theatre and life, birth and death — forging a remarkable body of work that recognises the complexity of the histories we inherit and the narratives we choose to forge from those histories” the committee continues.
Previous winners of the International Ibsen Award include acclaimed artists such as Back to Back Theatre, Taylor Mac, Christoph Marthaler, Forced Entertainment, Peter Handke, Peter Brook, Ariane Mnouchkine, Heiner Goebbels, and Jon Fosse.
